Is Netlify blocked in China? 137-node probe results

Netlify was usually reachable from Mainland China in our tests — 131 of 137 China probe nodes returned HTTP 200. The bigger risks are DNS variability, third-party dependencies, cross-border latency, and ICP filing for commercial use.

Frequently asked questions

Is Netlify blocked in Mainland China?

Not in this test set. A nationwide HTTP probe across 137 Mainland China monitoring nodes returned HTTP 200 from 131 of them, a 95.6% success rate. The exceptions were timeout-like or platform-specific probe errors concentrated in a small number of carrier and location combinations, which points to regional or carrier variability rather than a uniform Mainland China block.

Does Netlify have a Mainland China edge region?

This test did not prove one. The demo reported its runtime region as aws-ap-southeast-1 while the probe geography resolved to Beijing, so what was measured is an overseas Netlify edge path that was reachable from Mainland China, not local Mainland China coverage.

How fast is Netlify from Mainland China?

In the nationwide probe, total time was 443 ms at P50, 1,273 ms at P90, and 2,260 ms at P95, with TTFB of 88 ms at P50. Browser tests of the same demo, whose payload is intentionally heavy at about 12.3 MB, finished loading in roughly 4.1 seconds on a Beijing fixed-line node and 5.3 seconds on a Shanghai node, both with zero failed page elements.

Do results for a netlify.app subdomain apply to our own custom domain?

No. Every result here was measured against a shared netlify.app subdomain. A production custom domain can behave differently for DNS and domain-level risk, so test your own domain the same way before relying on these numbers.

What usually fails first, Netlify itself or the page dependencies?

Usually the dependencies. A Netlify page can load while its dependency graph fails, and the common risk categories are international font providers, analytics and tag managers, authentication widgets, embedded maps, video providers, support widgets, CMS delivery APIs, payment or identity providers, social embeds, and scripts hosted on international CDNs. Inventory every external hostname the page loads and test those from Mainland China.

Do we still need an ICP filing if the Netlify site already loads in China?

Technical reachability does not answer the compliance question. For many commercial scenarios a China-facing domain should go through the appropriate ICP filing process, and relying only on an unfiled overseas domain leaves platform or CDN onboarding limits, domain-level enforcement risk, takedown risk, and procurement objections in place even when the site loads.
